X-Ray diffraction

Principle

Specific method for the identification of crystals, it relies on the interference properties of X-rays in organized (crystalline) matter. These interactions, either constructive or destructive, allow to determine the lattice parameters of minerals, and then to identify them.

Measurements

Mainly carried out on finely grinded powder, placed on a glass plate, the measurement provides spectra from which indexing peaks characterizes mineral phases present in the material.

This approach is also involved in the evaluation of the heating temperature of crystallized materials by detecting specifics formations.
